1. Reading comprehension: What does the source suggest about _?

a. 3 mark q: 3 min, make at least three points

b. 2 mark q: 2 min, make at least two points

• Back up each point with a quote from the source, paraphrase

2. 4 mark q: 6-7min, Values and limitations

• Two paragraphs - one for values and one for limitations
• Talk about the values and/or limitations for the content, origin and purpose
• Try to stick to a paragraph on values and a paragraph on limitations - important to not seem like you are

contradicting yourself

• Origin - primary or secondary? Is it biassed? What nationality / perspective does it show? (only

one?) value of first-person insight or hindsight? What is the timeframe/date?

• Purpose - is it to gain support or justify own reasons? (may be exaggerated), To inform? To show

the success/failures of a factor/policy/etc.? persuasion?

• Content - is the content explicitly relevant to the question? What does it show? Is the source too

vague or focused more on another topic? (eg. if extracted from a source on a larger topic)

3. 6 mark q: 8-10 min, Compare and contrast between two sources

• Two paragraphs - one for similarities and one for differences
• Three points each paragraph
• Perspectives, content, tone etc.
• Compare - Both sources state / suggest / agree that
• Contrast - Source A states that … while Source B …

4. 9 mark q: 30-35 min, essay

- PLAN

• Answer the question, use words from the question (key words)
• Two perspectives - should not be opposing, but does have to be different
• Use the sources and own knowledge to support the analysis
• Can group sources to show commonality, or contrast views shown by different sources
• Reference sources used specifically and clearly, use quotes from them
• Must add in own historical knowledge, but should be relevant to the topic
• Usually to present alternate view - eg. if question is to what extent this factor was relevant, can

add own knowledge on other factors that were relevant

• Analyse and synthesise, do NOT just describe 1 / 2
