WW1KeyBattles Contents BattleOfTannenberg-Page1and2 BattleOfSomme-Page2 BattleOfVerdun-Page3 BrusilovOffensive-Page3and4 BattleOfTannenberg TheBattleofTannenbergwasoneofWW1'sfirstbattles.FoughtontheEasternfrontbetweenRussia andGermanyinmodern-dayPoland.Thebattletookplacefromthe26thtothe30thofAugust1914,1 monthafterWW1started.BeforetheBattlestarted,Rennenkampf'sFirstArmywasmovingtothewest.ThiswasbeforeGermany waspreparedanddidn’tpredictRussiawouldbetheresoearlybecauseRussiahadextensiverugged terrain,industrialresourcesshortagesandalackofinfrastructure.However,onJuly25th1914(3Days beforetheWar)Russiawasontheadvance.Russia’sFirstArmy(commanderRennenkampf)targeted KonigsburgasthencouldlateradvancetoBerlin,whiletheSecondArmy(commanderSamsonov)circled theGermanEighthArmy(commanderPaulVanHinnberg).However,theFirstArmyhadtoretreatto gathermoreresources,soPaulVonHindenbergdecidedtosplithis200,000-soldierArmy(comparedto the500,000totalRussianArmy)tosendalargeportionofhisarmytoattackthesecondArmyandthe remainingtobattlethefirstarmy.TheBattleoftheSecondArmydidn’tgowell.OnAugust27th,Samsonovthoughthehadtheupper hand.However,GermanyattackedSamsonov’sleftflankinasurpriseattack,sendinghalftheSecond Armyretreating.OnAugust29th,againSamsonovwascaughtoffguardastheGermanArmy Surroundedthem,sendingtherestoftheSecondArmyintosurrender.BecausetheFirstArmywasn’t morethan110kmfromtheFirstArmy,theGermanscaughtupanddefeatedtheFirstArmy.
