BIO 117 Final Exam Review

Lecture 17: Reproductive 1

-Reproductive systems: always locate the bladder first, then what’s around it.-Meiosis is making eggs and sperm, everything else is mitosis

-Males testes are outside of the body for thermal regulation

-”point and shoot” parasympathetic: erection. sympathetic: ejaculation.

-Primary sexual characteristics: things that only men or only women have.

-Secondary sexual characteristics: is what happens in puberty.

-Endometrium: menstrual cycle - where baby implants,

-Myometrium: smooth muscle - what ejects baby when ready

-“O,O” ovulation happens in the ovaries -“F,F” fertilization happens in the fallopian tube -implantation happens in the uterus - endometrium

Lecture 18: Female Reproductive & Human Development

hormones from the brain controls the ovaries, ovaries control the uterus

-Follicular phase: FSH tells the ovaries to make estrogen... which tells uterine wall to rebuild

-Ovulation: LH causes egg to be ejected into fallopian tube

-Luteal phase: LH tells the ovary to make progesterone… which goes to the uterus and has it keep secreting aka the Secretory phase to keep the wall built up in case there’s a baby and waits for the signal hCG: hormone from baby telling body it’s pregnant… If you’re not pregnant, your progesterone levels go down. If they go down, your endometrial wall “sheds” aka the Menstrual phase. The Proliferative phase is your body starting all over again, preparing to become pregnant.

-Zygote: fertilized egg

-Blastocyst: (implantated) early baby

-Amnion: baby side of placenta (think amniotic fluid)

-Chorion: mom side of placenta

Hormones made by the placenta: estrogen, progesterone,

and prostaglandins (pain! “P,P”) 1 / 2

Process of labor:

-Progesterone levels decrease -Releasing of prostaglandins - contractions! Ouchie, hard pass.-OXYTOCIN gets that myometrium goin’ BB!

Estrogen and progesterone makes the boobs bigger!Prolactin makes milk Oxytocin shoots out the milk

Lecture 19: Intro to Micro Bio & Blood

Pathogen: disease causing microorganism

Vector: spread disease host to host

Bacteria: larger than virus bc has many cells and can survive outside of the body. They have a cell wall NOT a cell membrane!

Know these and that they’re treated with antibiotics:

staphylococcus, streptococcus, pneumonia, gonorrhea, meningitis, tetanus lol srry, botulism, and good ole tuberkulosis aka TB.

Virus: very small, must live inside you, cannot survive outside.

Know these and that they’re treated with antivirals:

measles, mumps, chicken pox, influenza, polio, HIV

Apparently he didnt think these next 3 were important so idk here it is

Fungus: “myco”- fungus

athlete’s foot, vaginitis (can we just say yeast infection), ringworm

Protozoa: their cells mimic human cells
