Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers. Neurotransmitters are produced in the cell body and sent down the axon for storage in the secretory vessicles of the axon terminals for release. When an impulse reaches the end of the axon, the neurotransmitters are released and transmitted across the synapse where they bind to the dendrites of the postsynaptic neuron.
