BIOS 135 Chapter 3 Terms
1. Functions of the cell membrane:
Answer homeostasis, transmits signals from outside the cell to the inside, provides a physical barrier between cell and environment
2. Homeostasis:
Answer regulates what can enter and exit the cell
3. Semi permeable:
Answer lows nutrients to enter and wastes to be expelled
4. Parts of the plasma membrane:
Answer phospholipid bilayer, transmembrane proteins, peripheral proteins, and cell recoginition
5. Phospholipid bilayer:
Answer a double layer of phospholipids that makes up plasma and organelle membranes
6. Transmembrane proteins:
Answer form channels through membranes
7. Peripheral proteins:
Answer on one side of membrane only --- cholesterols
8. Cell recognition:
Answer glycoproteins and glycolipids on the outside for cell recognition
9. Diffusion:
Answer movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
