Chapter 5: Health Promotion of Preschoolers (3-6 years)
Gross motor skills by age
3- year-old: rides a tricycle*, jumps off bottom step, stands on one food for
a few seconds
4- year-old: skips and hops on one foot, throws ball overhead, catches ball

5- year-old: jumps rope, walks backward with heel to toe, throws and catches
a ball with ease

Pretend play is healthy and allows preschoolers to determine the difference between reality and fantasy Nutrition: recommended that preschoolers have 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. and 1 hour of physical activity a day Sleep: keep a consistent bedtime routine and need about 12 hours of sleep per day
Chapter 6: Health Promotion of School Age Children (6-12)
Weight: school age children will gain about 4.4-6.6 lb per year
Height: children will grow about 2 inches per year 1 / 2
Erickson: Industry vs. Inferiority
- A sense of industry is achieved through the development of skills and acknowledge
that allows the child to provide meaningful contributions to society. Age appropriate activities: play simple board and number games, play hopscotch, jump rope, collect rocks, stamps etc., ride bicycles, build simple models, join organized sports *Health Screenings: Scoliosis- school aged children should be screened for scoliosis by examining for a lateral curvature of the spine before and during growth spurts. Screening can take place at schools or at health care facilities
Poisoning/substance abuse:
- Cleaners and chemicals should be kept in locked cabinets or out of reach of younger
children. Motor Vehicle: children should use an approved care restraint system until the achieved height of 4’, 9”.
Chapter 7: Health Promotion of Adolescent (12-20)
Boys stop growing around 18-20 years of age Girls stop growing at about 2 to 2.5 years after the onset of menarche Boys sexual maturation occurs in the following order
- Testicular enlargement
- Pubic hair growth
- Penile enlargement
- Growth of axillary hair
- Facial hair growth
- Vocal changes

Girls sexual maturation occurs in the following order
