Experiment #: 1

Title: Kinetics

Purpose: To learn about speed of chemical reactions and how concentration and temperature can impact the reaction rates.

Procedure:

Experiment #1

  • Pour approximately 10mL of 0.1M S2O3
  • 2- into test tube 1 2-

  • Pour approximately 8mL of
  • S2O3

  • Pour approximately 6mL of
  • S2O 2-

  • Pour approximately 4mL of
  • S2O 2-

  • Pour approximately 2mL of
  • S2O 2-

into test tube 2, add 2mL water into test tube 3, add 4mL water into test tube 4, add 6mL water Into test tube 5, add 8mL water

  • Add 10mL of HCl to test tube 1 and start timer. Mix gently and observe for turbidity
  • Note time when a white cloudiness appears
  • Repeat step 6 and 7 for test tubes 2 through 5

Experiment #2

  • Using gas apparatus, mix 5mL H2O2 and 15mL H2O in mixing chamber
  • Observe and note initial volume of O2, and pour in 10mL Kl and put on stopper
  • When 2mL of O2 has been produced, start timer
  • Record time measurements after each 2mL of O2 has been produced
  • Repeat steps 1 through 4 for trial 2 and t with the corresponding amount of H2O2, H2O, and Kl

Experiment #3

  • Repeat experiment #2 with a water bath to increase temperature to 35
