6.1.1 Orthographic projections

• Pictorials are representations of an object in which all the dimensions are visible
• Pictorials give a quick representation of a part do that anyone can understand it
• Realistic and useful, but not precise
• 90 degree corners shown at angles other than 90
• Circle drawn as ellipses or oval
• multiview orthographic projections
• Orthographic: every point on the object is projected at right angles to the viewing plane

(parallel to each other)

• Multiview: select views such that every feature is drawn at least once in its true view
• True View: shape and dimensions of an object are shown as exactly as they are in real

life

• In practice viewing planes are chosen to be parallel to object’s front/side/top

• Features on planes parallel to the viewing plane will be shown in their true view
• Otherwise they will appear foreshortened; measurements will not be possible
• Specifically, planes and edges perpendicular to the viewing plane will collapse into single 1 / 2
