-Women unable to tolerate estrogen and women during lactation -Must be taken same time everyday!
- COC contraindications?
Answer -History of MI, CVA, DVT
-Major surgery with prolonged immobilization 1 / 2
-Uncontrolled severe HTN -Smoker > or = to 35 years -Migraine with focal aura -DM > 20 yrs -Current breast or endometrial cancer -Acute hepatitis -Severe cirrhosis or cirrhosis flare -Hepatocellular adenoma -Hepatocellular carcinoma -HTN with advanced vascular disease(retinopathy &nephropathy) -Current pregnancy or lactation
- COC side effects?
Answer -Weight gain, spotting, breast tenderness, depression, break through bleeding
- Meds that affect COC efficacy?
Answer -Antimicrobials= Rifampin (TB treatment med), Griseofulvin (antifungal)
-Anti-Seizure meds= carbamazepine (Tegretol), lamatrogine (Lamictal), phenytoin (Dilantin), phenobarbital, topiramate (Topamax) -Anti-depressants= St. John's Wort, Protease inhibitors (treats HIV + women) -Antibiotics do NOT affect efficacy, it is antimicrobials!
