NUR 339 Final Drugs

  • Epinephrine (Adrenaline)
  • Epi-Pen Answer Adrenergic drug - SNS stimulation Treats anaphylaxis, shock and cardiac arrest, bronchoconstriction. Action

Increases CO, blood flow, BP, causes bronchodilation.

AEs

dysrhythmias, HTN, excess CNS stimulation.

  • Norepinephrine (Levophed) IV drip
  • Answer Adrenergic drug - SNS stimulation Action stimulates alpha receptors only--vasoconstriction Use severe hypotension, stimulates vasoconstriction -> increasing BP AEs" severe decrease in blood flow to periphery (decreases it further) NIs assess cap refill, pulses, and temp.

  • Dopamine (Intropin)
  • Answer Adrenergic drug - SNS stim. Variable effects Low increase renal blood

Med 1 / 3

increase HR and CO (positive inotropic) High alpha-vasoconstriction and increase BP.AEs

dysrhythmia, tachycardia, decreased blood flow to periphery. IV infiltration -> tissue necrosis with extravasation -> Regitine (phentolamine) ANTIDOTE

  • Prazosin (Minipress)
  • Answer Anti-adrenergic - SNS inhibitor. ALPHA Adrenergic antag- onist Use

treats hypertension Action occupy the alpha-receptor sites on smooth muscle of blood vessels -> vasodilation, decrease peripheral vascular resistance, decrease BP AEs 1st dose effect

decreases BP & syncope due to orthostatis hypotension. NIs Give bedtime, monitor BP and flushing.

  • Propranolol (Inderal)
  • Answer Anti-adrenergic - SNS inhibitor.BETA adrenergic antago- nists (blockers)

Use

hypertension, HF, some dysrhythmias, migraine, angina, and glaucoma. Actions 2 / 3

decrease BP and force of contractions, decrease HR AEs hypotension, blurred vision, bradycardia, mental depression.

Avoid with asthma (causes bronchospasms) Teach to take pulse once a week.

  • Bethanecol (Urecholine)
  • Answer Cholinergic drug - PNS stimulation Direct-acting- stimulates the cholinergic receptors Use treats urinary retention and paralytic ileus

AEs

n/v/d, bronchoconstriction, increase resp and oral secretions, bradycardia, decrease LOC -> coma, pupil constriction (miosis)

  • Neostigmine (Prostigmin) OR
  • Pyridostigmine Answer Cholinergic - PNS stimulation Indirect-acting -- blocks acetylcholinesterase

Use

treats MG, reverse neuromuscular blockers, treat Alzheimer's Antidote for cholinergic OD? -->

ATROPINE

  • Atropine
  • Answer Anticholinergic - PNS inhibitor

Increases HR in symptomatic bradycardia and heartblock. Treats bradycardia and bronchoconstriction
