CHEM 121 Lab Report 10: Urinalysis - Portage Learning

Name:

Date:

Experiment: 10

Title: Urinalysis

Purpose: in this experiment we will conduct chemical examination of a simulated urine sample

Procedure:

Test for number of materials that should be routinely present in the blood or urine. Test for chloride phosphate ion, calcium ion, ammonium ion, proteins, sugars and ketones.

Urinalysis - Test for Chloride (Cl-) This test measures the amount of chloride in urine and is used to evaluate and manage acid-base, fluid and electrolyte imbalances.

  • chloride ion solution is in the test tube
  • Colorless solution of silver nitrate AgNO3 Cl-
  • White precipitate immediate.

Urinalysis - Test for Phosphate (PO4-3) The phosphate urine test measures the amount of phosphate in a sample or urine collected in a 24-hour urine test. Phosphate is an ion that contains the mineral phosphorus needed by the body to build and repair bones and teeth, help nerves function and make muscles contract. Excess phosphate is filleted by the kidneys and passes out of the body in the urine. Kidney problems can cause high or low levels of phosphate in the urine or by an overactive parathyroid gland.

  • sodium phosphate in the test tube
  • Add a few drops of ammonium molybdate
  • Not a change in color
  • Yellow precipitate is there if nitric acid is present
  • Color will become yellow but still able to see through it
  • Hot water bath
  • Yellow solid will form ammonium phosphomolybdate (NH4)3po4 12MoO3

Urinalysis - Test for Calcium (Ca +2) This test measures the amount of calcium in urine and is used to diagnose the cause of kidney stones and other kidney diseases, detect malfunctioning of the parathyroid glands and monitor disorders of the kidney.

  • calcium ion in test tube
  • Requires ammonium oxalate - reagent
  • Pour into the test tube with calcium ion (NH4) 2C2O4
  • White precipitate of calcium oxalate CaC2O4
  • Suspend it
  • / 1
