Title: Bonding type by Solubility, Distillation and Spectroscopy

Purpose: In this lab we will study the infrared spectra and physical properties of molecules to determine what kind of intra-molecular bonds are present within the molecules and what kind of inter-molecular bonds are present between the molecules. To study the bonds that form between molecules.

Procedure:

Solubility

  • K+ Cl-
  • In the test tube we have water then in a dropper we have Potassium Chloride to then see if it is soluble in water. KCl forms strong bonds with molecules especially in water. At first we see a white solid at the bottom of the test tube than after mixing the white solid is gone therefore determining KCl is soluble in water.

#2 Pentane CH3 CH2 CH2 CH2 CH3 In the test tube we have water then we add the liquid pentane to it. Here we see that there is a layer above the water. Then we mix it to see if it will combine with the water. That is not the case, the pentane layer is still present after mixing. Concluding that Pentane is a non polar liquid.

#3 n-propyl chloride In the test tube we have water then we add the n-propyl chloride to it. Here we see that there is a layer above the water. Then we mix it to see if it will combine with the water. That is not the case, the n-propyl chloride layer is still present after mixing. Concluding that n-propyl chloride is a non polar liquid.

#4 ethyl - alcohol In the test tube we have water and then we add ethyl-alcohol. Here we see that it is fully absorbed. This means that ethyl-alcohol is polar liquid.

#5 n-butyl alcohol In the test tube we have water then we add n-butyl alcohol. Here we see that there is a little layer on top of the water. It gets a bit cloudy but as we mix it the layer vanishes a little bit. Concluding that n-butyl alcohol is partially soluble in water.
