In times of disaster and/or mass casualties the health care system can become overwhelmed by the number and severity of the patients. The patients may outnumber the availability of the local resources. This happens rapidly.

Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment

Uses a limited assessment of the patient's ability to walk, respiratory status, hemodynamic status (pulse - radial, decent CO) and neuro status

Performed on arrival - call out to patients at the disaster site "If you can hear my voice and can walk ........" give directions. These people are the walking wounded and are green.

Non walking people - first person and assess resp, if not breathing - open airway if still not breathing move on. If breathing turn into recovery position and tag red.Check bilateral radial pulse, absent radial - low Bp, red Neuro status - follow simple commands. If unable - red, if able yellow

Peds < 8yrs old and < 100 lbs Identify the walking wounded

If too young to follow commands or walk, or have special needs - they need to go to the treatment center for secondary triage If not breathing, check a pulse. If no pulse - black If pulse is present but no resp - open the airway if patient does not breathe, give 5 rescue breaths and recheck, if still no spontaneous breathing - black

Assess rate of resp. Approximate <15 or > 45 - red. If between 15 and 45 then check a distal pulse, if absent - red. If present, then check neuro
