PFT

Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV) - ANSWER-volume of gas that can be forcefully inspired after a normal VT inhalation

Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV) - ANSWER-volume of gas that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal VT exhalation

Residual Volume (RV) - ANSWER-volume of air remaining in the lungs after a forced exhalation

Lung capacities - ANSWER-combinations of lung volumes

Vital Capacity (VC) - ANSWER-the volume of air that can be exhaled after a maximum inspiration.

VC = - ANSWER-IRV+VT+ERV

Reasons to perform PFT - ANSWER-1 Dx obstructive or restrictive disease..2 evaluate causes of dyspnea 3 Assess severity of disease 4 Evauate effectiveness of tx 5 Estimate prognosis in lung disease (staging)

Normal PFT values based on: - ANSWER-Gender, Age, *Height, (Body size) (Race)

PFT - ANSWER-indentifies devieations from normal predicted values

Normal PFT - ANSWER-80-120% of predicted

Mild PFT - ANSWER-65-80% of predicted

Moderate PFT - ANSWER-50-64% of predicted

Severe PFT - ANSWER-< 50 % of predicted

Tidal Volume (VT) - ANSWER-volume of gas (air) that moves in and out of lungs in one breath

Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) - ANSWER-exhalation is done as rapidly as possible..Evaluates both large and small airways..Effort dependent..repeast 3 FVCs with variation no greater than 5%

Slow Vital Capacity (SVC) - ANSWER-exhalation is done slowly to prevent air trapping.
