Grade/Level/Setting: 3rd Grade

this classroom is composed of 20 students, all within a reading level of each other, seated in five groups of four throughout the classroom. Instruction will involve both group work and independent work among the students.

Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge:

Students will have prior knowledge of other parts of a sentence structure, such as verbs, pronouns, and nouns.Additionally, all students are at the current reading level appropriate for this lesson.Standards and Objectives State/National Academic Standard(s): CCSS.ELA-Literacy.:L.3.1 Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences.

Learning Objective(s):

By the end of the lesson students will be able to identify all adjectives and adverbs in a sentence and to use both adjectives and adverbs correctly in their writing. Students will demonstrate this knowledge through the worksheet provided at the end of the lesson. They will correctly identify adjectives and adverbs 80% of the time on the worksheet and properly use them in their own writing 70% of the time on the worksheet.MaterialsTechnology -SMARTboard -20 copies of Adjectives and Adverb Worksheet

The planned language support for this lesson will be the Common Adverb poster listing examples of common adverbs, which will be posted in front of the classroom for all the students.Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks

Anticipatory Set:

Activity Description/TeacherStudent Actions I will start the lesson by reviewing the parts of speech my students have already mastered (nouns, pronouns, and verbs) My students will give me examples of nouns, pronouns, and verbs and the definition of each one.

Presentation Procedures for New Information and/or Modeling:

Activity Description/TeacherStudent Actions I will explain to my students that we will learn two new parts of speech (adjectives and adverbs) by looking at sentences I write on the SMARTboard containing them.Students will listen to the definitions of adjectives and adverbs I give them and watch as I give them examples of them in sentences I write on the SMARTboard.

Guided Practice:

Activity Description/TeacherStudent Actions -As a class, we will come up with sentences together containing one adjective and one adverb that I will then write on the SMARTboard -we will then go over the instructions for each section of the Adjectives and Adverbs worksheet together, and I will clarify anything when necessary.Students will give me suggestions on adjectives and adverbs I can use (referencing the common adverb chart posted in the front of the classroom when necessary) in the sentence that fits with both the noun and verb we are using.

Independent Student Practice:

Activity Description/TeacherStudent Actions students will independently complete Adjectives and Adverbs worksheet while I walk around the classroom, monitoring and offering assistance and clarification when necessary.Students will work independently to complete the Adjectives and Adverbs worksheet and ask for assistance and clarification when needed.
